English Language Program (ELP)
In the English Language Program (ELP), students whose first language is not English will develop strategies for using English to be successful in Canadian academic settings.
Students receive instruction in English only classrooms, and students within the ELP Program will improve their English skills from intermediate to advanced levels in the following areas:
- Critical thinking
Students in the ELP Program attend classes full time, and the ELP Program runs year round in three semesters:
- Fall: September - December (15 weeks) - all levels
- Winter: January - April (15 weeks) - all levels
- Spring/ Summer: May - August (15 Weeks) - ESL Certificate Levels only
- Spring: May/June (7 weeks) - ELP College Preparation bridge courses only
Each semester has a variety of courses for all stages of language learning. After a student has been assessed through an extensive Placement Test, they are given a list of possible courses they may take. All courses are delivered in a face-to-face classroom format. Students who successfully complete the advanced level in the ELP Program (ELP 70 and ELP 75) will receive an English Language Certificate.
Upon completing the English Language certificate, students can enroll in the ELP intensive college preparation bridge course (ELP 98 and ELP 95). Students can also place directly into ELP 98 with an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with a band of 5.5 in Reading and Writing. Some programs at the College require prerequisites; therefore, certain ELP courses must be taken in order to pursue additional educational goals. Students who are enrolled in ELP 98 may take other courses at College of the Rockies.
