Introduction to Goldsmithing | $49 + GST

Course Overview:

What is Goldsmithing?  Wikipedia says 'A goldsmith is a metalworker who specializes in working with gold and other precious metals.  Historically, goldsmiths also have made silverware, platters, goblets, decorative and serviceable utensils, ceremonial or religious items, but the rising prices of precious metals have curtailed the making of such items to a large degree.'  Join Mario Melisse for an evening of discussion about 'smithing', what it involves, what kind of instruments are used, how long it takes to become a 'smith' and more.

Who is Mario?  Mario Melisse is originally from Holland and studied photography, audio visual and sculpture at the AKI (art school) in the Netherlands.  He moved to Ireland as a young adult where he started his goldsmithing apprenticeship soon after in Dublin.  He has designed curriculum for the FAS Training & Employment Authority in Ireland and ran a design studio in Ireland for 16 years.  Since moving to Canada 10 years ago, Mario's focus is to teach again and he is building a workshop to facilitate that goal.

Mario will be teaching a goldsmith course at the college once there is sufficient interest.
