Identify river dynamics and utilize all rafting equipment, related safety gear and clothing, demonstrate river rescue and self-rescue techniques and manoeuvre the raft up to class 4 water using oar and paddle strokes.  Participants must be 19 years of age, a strong swimmer, and understand English.

Course includes:  new 4-day format SFR-T certification ($780 value), 10 days on the Elk and Bull Rivers, rafts – self-bailing, oars, paddles, frames, first aid kits, transportation to and from the river sites, BC Raft Guides Manual, SRT Manual and Certificate of Competency (upon successful completion).  You provide:  Accommodation in Fernie during course, wet or dry suit, PFD, helmet, booties, river knife, and lunches for all river days.

This 9-month program combines classroom and practical experience, giving students the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to care for individuals in residential care, assisted living facilities, community settings and in their homes.

Supplies: Students must have safety-toed leather work books/shoes, safety glasses, pens, pencils, three-ring binder, calculator and paper, tape measure and work clothes (coveralls).

Students applying for this program will be required to submit a resume along with their application. The focus of the Lifelong Learning Program is the educational interests of adults 50+ however classes and activities are open to all adults, regardless of age, because it’s never too late to learn something new. Become part of a community of active learners!

The Lifelong Learning Program (LLP) is a cost-sustainable membership-driven program, established to meet a wide range of interests of Golden’s growing number of seniors, including the newly retired and semi-retired “boomers”. Classes are usually small, with individual support offered. Here is a great opportunity to continue learning at reduced program activity fees.

Membership in LLP entitles you to special rates for all program activities. Many activities are priced to allow for the fact that older adults are on fixed incomes. There is a yearly membership fee of $20 per person or $15 per person for members of the Golden Seniors Association (plus HST) payable at the time you register. Please show your Golden Seniors membership card when registering to get your discount. Adults under age 50 and non-members may participate in LLP learning activities as space allows and at the non-member rate.

 Join us for a Pilates-based bone building class with special focus on postural correction, core strength and stability, fracture prevention and FUNctional fitness! Exercises involve weight bearing, balance, and spinal mobility. Please bring your own mat. Other props, including gliding discs, resistance bands, light weights, balls and foam rollers will be available for your use. All levels welcome.  You must be able get down to and up from a mat.  Exercises are modified from moderately easy to very challenging. Two classes per week.

Janis completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree specializing in painting and drawing from the University of Calgary in 1997. Later Janis went on to study art therapy at The Vancouver Art Therapy Institute graduating in 2001. Golden has been her home for the past nine years and she has enjoyed living and painting here. During this time Janis held a show of paintings and drawings at the Golden and District Arts Council Gallery (2002) and has completed a number of commissioned works. Janis’s paintings have been shown at The Art Gallery of Golden, Bacchus Books and Genuine Organics. Currently, her work is on display at Bacchus Books and the Golden Optometrist’s office. 
Janis lives with her husband and two young boys and gain inspiration from life in Golden, the beauty of our natural environment and her work as an art therapist.

Module 1 -- Fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) -- 4 weeks

Explore this incredible 2500 year old healthcare system! Originating from the Daoist school, uncover how all phenomena is interpreted as interdependent, interactive, and a unique part of a larger pattern. Discover the most important theories in TCM, including yin-yang theory, 5 element theory, meridian theory, the 6 vital substances, causes of illness, and a brief introduction to TCM patterns of disease and disharmony.

Module 2 -- Food-as-Medicine (Chinese Medical Dietetics) -- 4 weeks

An introduction to the concept of Food-as-Medicine, from a Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) perspective. Students are introduced to the theory and practical application of using food to optimize health, and for the prevention and treatment of disease.

Module 3 -- The 7 Emotions and the 5 Element Types - Chinese Medical Psychology I -- 4 weeks

This course offers both a theoretical and 'hands-on' approach to the 7 emotions of Chinese medicine and the 5 element 'types'. The theory of the 7 emotions is filtered through the 5 element theory, and while each emotion relates to one or more element, the emotions themselves also interact with one another in much the same way as the 5 elements.
 

Prerequisites

If you are planning to complete the entire TCM program to earn your certificate you must complete ALL 3 modules.

Module 1, Fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a prerequisite for Modules 2 and 3, unless students have an introductory background to TCM (to be determined by the instructor).

There are some technical requirements and participants must be comfortable with using computers, e-mail and internet.  Instructions on how to access the course are provided to all registered participants prior to each module starting.  Online technical support is also available during the program.

Do you know how to manage animals with severy injury?

This six-hour course is a continuation for those who have prior pet first aid training or who have completed the Pet First Aid Level 1 course. A brief review of how to recognize an emergency is covered but the course quickly moves into more advanced subjects such as broken bones, dislocations, eye injuries, electrocution, impaled objects and more. Topics also covered are how to make an emergency stretcher out of everyday objects and how to properly manage animals with severe injury.

This is an active class where students are asked to practice skills and work through mock emergency drills. Comfortable clothing should be worn as a result.

Participants work with toy animals but are also asked to bring a healthy, well socialized dog (to both humans and other dogs) if possible so that skills previously learned in the basic class and new skills learned in the advanced class can be practiced on their active and wiggling animal. Pet patients aren’t always cooperative and this is where you need to practice those skills so you know what to do in a true emergency. Dogs should have all shots and be spayed/neutered. If not altered, no female dogs in heat will be permitted to attend and in-tact male dogs must demonstrate that they are well socialized with other dogs before class. Overview

Would you love to work overseas teaching English or pursue ESL employment opportunities in Canada?  If so then the Peak TESOL program is a great choice.

The Peak TESOL program is offered in both face-to-face and online formats.  Instructors provide support including plenty of feedback on assignments and help and advice in overseas job searches.

Online Program

For those who prefer to learn at home, this blended delivery program offers flexibility while meeting all the same learning outcomes and providing the same certification as our face-to-face program.

This 120-hour certificate program includes a 20-hour practicum as well as 100 hours of theory and methodology delivered in an easy-to-use interactive Virtual Learning Environment called Moodle.  Instructors provide support within forums in the Moodle classroom, plenty of feedback on assignments and help and advice in overseas job searches.  The theory and methodology is delivered online over a period of 12 weeks with a minimum of 8 hours of coursework completed each week.  The practicum must be completed within 12 months of the start date of the program.

Technical Requirements

A reliable computer, video camera (or webcam – available for as little as $20), speakers, and microphone will be required in order to complete the program.  Participants must be comfortable with using computers, e-mail and internet.  Instructions on how to access the course are provided to all registered participants prior to each module starting.  Online technical support is also available during the program.

Face-to-Face (F2F) Program

The face-to-face Peak TESOL program is a 110-hour certificate program consisting of 100 hours of face-to-face theory and methodology, and 10 hours of practicum.

Each participant will teach five lessons each of which will be followed by a self-reflection and feedback session with your instructor and peers.  In addition, some of the practicum hours are directed observations of professional ESL teachers at work.  One of the 10 units of the course will focus on what you need to know before applying for a job as well as living and working overseas.

Our Peak TESOL program is now recognized by TESL Canada!  Successful completion of the 110-hour face-to-face Peak TESOL program and the 10-hour Peak TESOL Applied Practice Module along with a university degree can earn you your TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard One.  *The Applied Practice Module consists of 7 hours of practice teaching and 3 hours of directed observation.  See below for more information on this module.

About the Instructor

Your instructor Carmen Schultz has been a certified doula with DONA International since 2000. She has worked in the perinatal field supporting women for 17 years.  She has furthered her knowledge through ongoing perinatal education and childbirth education studies. Her experience includes working with at-risk youth throughout their pregnancies and into parenthood, managing a local Crisis Pregnancy Centre, co-facilitating a postpartum depression support group as well as teaching prenatal classes to expectant families. Carmen has supported countless women through their journey into parenthood and is the proud mother of two children.

Module Descriptions

Module 1 -- The Doula as a Holistic Birth Practioner

This module is an introduction to the role of a doula. It allows you to learn more about yourself and how this may translate in the support of your clients. You will also learn how a doula can support a woman in birth, stay within her scope of practice and how to assist the client during the stages of natural birth as part of the maternity care team.

Module 2 -- The Doula during Childbirth

You will learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the childbearing woman. You will also learn common terminology and abbreviations used by medical professionals as well as common intervention or procedures a woman may face in childbirth. Spirituality and birth culture will also be explored.

Module 3 -- The Baby, the Business and You

This unit introduces you to the early postpartum. Here you will cover newborn procedures, basic breastfeeding and changes in the mother. You will also explore what it takes to start a successful doula business as well as how to handle some of the challenges a doula may face in her own life.

 

Pre-requisites

If you are planning to complete the entire Birth Doula Studies program and earn your Continuing Education Certificate, you must complete ALL of the following in addition to the online studies:

• A minimum of 20 hours of volunteer experience
• Read and report on 2 books from the required reading list
• Attend 2 births: You must be in attendance for a minimum of 4 hours for each birth

There are some technical requirements and participants must be comfortable with using computers, e-mail and internet.  Instructions on how to access the course are provided to all registered participants prior to each module starting.  Online technical support is also available during the program.

This course will introduce you to the basics of practical beekeeping and will provide you with the knowledge to get started with your own honey bees.  Two full-day classroom sessions are followed with a Beekeeping Field Day where you will have an opportunity to put classroom theory into practice with the assistance of experienced beekeepers.

Jasmine Lothien has over 17 years’ experience as a professional counsellor working with people from all walks of life. She provides services in Anger/Stress Management, Depression/Grief, Life Transitions, Relationship Enhancement, Increase Positive Self-esteem - just to name a few. Jasmine has organized community events such as Take Back the Night to raise public awareness on the subject of anti-violence. Please join her as she offers two workshops this winter.

Jean Hoover will show you how to use simple recycled materials and garden waste to eliminate the back-breaking effort usually put into digging out sod and weeds. A tour of the college demonstration garden and the instructors’ extensive demonstration gardens are included. 

A Dispenser Commercial license is for people who sell commercial pesticides - primarily in sales outlets where pesticides are sold to farmers or other professional commercial applicators. The pesticides sold would be labelled as Commercial, Agricultural, Industrial or Restricted class products. Note: a person certified in the Dispenser Commercial category can also sell Domestic labelled pesticides; the Ministry of Environment recommends people involved in sales of Domestic pesticides obtain the Dispenser Domestic certification.

Make your own unique beautiful ceramic jewellery using clay. 

At the end of this workshop you will have a five (5) piece collection of jewellery which could include earrings, necklaces or brooches or other items. You will also have the skills to continue making your own.

The instructor, Bea Von Allmen has been designing and making pottery, jewellery and clothing for 20 years.  Her work is available for sale at many area galleries and at her own studio in Canyon.

Being new on the job is hard and learning to speak up for your rights as a worker can sometimes be difficult; but no paycheque is worth getting hurt for. You need to make sure you stay safe and get home in one piece---no matter what. Take the initiative to know what your rights and responsibilities are and how to stay safe in the workplace. 

High school students, young workers and new workers are welcome to attend. 

This course is offered in conjunction with WorkSafeBC Youth Week, May 1-7.

They are both the same instrument, and this class will provide a beginning start into both.   Rhonda Barter has studied, performed and taught violin/fiddle for the past 40 years.  Her experience and love of the instrument comes out in the strings – let her show you how.  You do not have to have any prior music experience; you don’t have to own a violin.

Instructor Cory Cannon is a professional artist working in a variety of media who started with pencil and still enjoys the simple pencil as a versatile tool to create with. Cory was a juried member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and won ‘Best New Artist’ at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction in 2006. His work can be viewed at cannonart.com.

Session 1: techniques, lines of reference, proportion, comparative distance and angle, shading and blending.  A variety of short drawing exercises will be employed to learn the various techniques.
 

Session 2: this part of the class will be for students to bring a new project idea with reference material. Students will then embark on this individual project to further the techniques they were introduced to in session one of the course. Materials:  pencil, paper, blender and erasers will be supplied.
 

Please bring a variety of pencils and various drawing supplies, even if they are not suitable they will make for good discussion.

The Community Greenhouse did an extensive Winter Harvest Research Project over a two year period to investigate the growing of cold tolerant vegetables in the fall, winter and spring in unheated environments.  Join this two session workshop to learn the results of our research and learn how to create a number of different growing environments, including cold frames to extend your gardening to all four seasons.  Participants will receive cold tolerant vegetable seedlings ready to plant into your garden.

A tour of the college demonstration environments and the instructors’ demonstration greenhouse is included.

Square Foot Gardening is a simple, unique and versatile system that adapts to all levels of experience, physical ability and geographical location.  Grow all you want and need in only 20% of the space of a conventional row garden. 

Join our certified Square Foot Gardening instructor, Doug Lyon, to learn how to save time, water, work and money.  The first session will include lecture and DVD presentation, demonstration and question period.  The second session is ‘hands-on’ where you will build your own square foot garden to take home. This is a great family project, for kids, adults and seniors.  Put it on wheels, put it on saw horses – no bending required!

The Square Foot Gardening book by Mel Bartholomew will be available for purchase in class for $21(includes tax).

Landscape General - For anyone applying pesticides on public land and for applicators providing pest management services to clients on private land (to manage insects, diseases and weeds of gardens, ornamental plantings and turf).

Stop by the College to look at our new Xeriscape garden.  The renovation took place in late May 2011 on the front lawn at the College. Xeriscape water wise gardening workshops continue to be offered at the college on a regular basis with the next one in the spring of 2012.

Join our new instructor, Evan Davies from Beltane Nursery, for a series of  interesting workshops that will be filled with useful information and helpful hints.

This course is a general introduction to growing small fruit.  We will take a look at the cultural practices involved in production of berry crops such as Strawberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Grapes, Gooseberries and Currants for the home garden.

Students who complete Level IV will be able to teach all levels of Reiki and will be considered "Reiki Master Teachers."

Reiki III students will learn how to teach Levels I and II. Students who complete Level III will be considered "Reiki Masters."

This level of Reiki increases the student practitioner's ability to intuitively read their clients' bodies and provide more focused energy. Students will also learn how to perform Reiki long distance.

Classes are limited to eight participants.

MarketSafe is a food safety training program designed to increase awareness and knowledge for farmers and producers who make, bake or grow products to sell at local farmers' markets, farm gates or other types of temporary food markets. People who successfully complete the MarketSafe course within British Columbia will receive a certificate issued by the Regional Health Authority in the region where the course was taken.

Private Pilot Ground School

Is a prerequisite to attaining your Private Pilot or Commercial Pilot License and is also recommended for those taking a Recreational Pilot Permit. Private Pilot Ground School is offered in a classroom setting at the College of the Rockies and completes 40 hours of study on the following subjects as required by Transport Canada:
 

• Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs)
• Aerodynamics and Theory of Flight
• Meteorology
• Airframes, Engines and Systems
• Flight Instruments
• Radio and Electronic Theory
• Navigation
• Flight Operations
• Licensing Requirements
• Human Factors including Pilot Decision Making (PDM)
 
 

All remaining training toward a pilot’s license (Recreational, Private or Commercial) will take place through BearAir at the Creston Valley Regional Airport.  Students may begin their flight training before, during or after they have taken ground school, however, Transport Canada requires 10 hours of flight training be completed before challenging the Private Pilot – Aeroplane (PPAER) Written Examination.
 

An Intro Flight is recommended before registration but is not a prerequisite.  Registrants should be 14 years of age or older.  Required book kit is available for purchase through BearAir.

The Online Herbal Practitioner (Formerly Practical Herbalist) Program for Healthcare Professionals has been specifically designed for professionals currently working or studying in the healthcare field and who wish to broaden their scope of care by increasing their knowledge of herbal and other natural remedies.

Fall protection is an important issue and mandatory under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

There are more than 2500 wildfires every year in BC. Successful fire fighting is based on knowing why a fire burns and what makes it spread.

Training objectives are to provide you with knowledge and understanding of the factors that determine the wild land fire environment and respond safely and effectively. Virtual TDG is designed to provide instruction for Canadian employees on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations.  TDG training is required for all employees involved in the transportation, storage, and shipment of goods classified as dangerous.

This is a great introduction to the craft of timber framing, and even experienced workers will enjoy using traditional hand tools and some specialized power tools to create a beautifully sculpted result.  The class will build and raise a small timber frame structure.

Do you know how to assist your pet in an emergency?

It happens every day. Animals are just as likely to experience illness or injury as humans are, yet most of us are completely unprepared to handle emergency situations for our furry companions.

This six-hour basic pet first aid class covers the skills needed to recognize an emergency for your pet and the skills needed to stabilize a sick or injured animal until qualified veterinary care can be accessed. Course content covers how to handle a sick or injured animal and what to do for choking, cardiac arrest, shock, environmental injuries (heat stroke & hypothermia, etc), wound management, and more. Participants should be prepared to practice skills during class and to work through mock emergency drills on toy animals.

The information supplied in the course speaks specifically about cats and dogs, but the theory can also be applied to other domesticated animals.

Successful participants are awarded a certificate of completion from the College of the Rockies. No prior first aid knowledge is required for this course.

This is a two-day, competency-based course, and covers the basic theory and practical skills that are required to become a qualified traffic control person.

The course consists of classroom and field sessions. Students MUST wear CSA Approved Class 1 steel toed work boots and clothing suitable for the weather. All other required student materials are included in the course fee.

ALL STUDENTS MUST BRING one (1) passport-sized photograph for the new traffic control picture ID (can be a digital photo but must be printed on photo paper, no other paper accepted -- photo size = 1-11/16" x 2-1/8").

Students will receive temporary certification immediately following the course providing all photo ID pictures and completed paperwork has been received from entire class.
