Seamus loves the outdoors, is a big believer in giving back to his community, and balances being a student with being the Communications Director for the Students’ Association. He has an infectious smile and a great work ethic. I asked him 10 questions to get to know him a little better – and so you can too.
What program are you in?
I am taking University Studies. Doing one more year next year and then hopefully transferring to UBC to go onto the Dietetics program to become a Registered Dietician.
Where did you go to high school?
I went to high school up in Terrace, BC, that is Northern BC, at Caledonia Senior Secondary School.
What do you think makes College of the Rockies unique?
I would say what makes it the most unique is the location. I walk a lot, I love the outdoors, so our back yard is just a beautiful landscape and then walking back into the College, there’s not a lot of people, you know everyone. You can talk to your teachers, you can even be friends with them and you can have that relationship with them where at other institutions you don’t really get to meet them, you have to schedule appointments. Here class sizes are small but yet we have so many international students. Because classes are so small you get a better connection with international students which will give you a a different look on cultures. It is just a very good college!
What is the best gift you have received?
I don’t want to sound too preachy but being able to go to college and being able to have free speech and living in a country that doesn’t put you down because you have different opinions than other people. Being able to go to college and go for a higher education where sometimes your family or older relatives never had that opportunity. So, something like that!
If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
Oh gosh. A warning label! I think my girlfriend would likely say I talk a lot. So probably a warning label would be like ‘If you are short for time don’t come to me because I will ramble for a long time’. So, “Watch Out, Rambling!”
What’s your favourite zoo animal?
I would say a tiger. And I don’t know why. I just think they are really majestic and they are fierce but they have this other side to them. I don’t know, I have always liked a tiger.
What was the last movie you went to see?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – just this weekend. It was an awesome movie. I went in there with little expectation, just like “ok, this could be good” but it surpassed that, it was a very good movie.
How would your best friends describe you?
Talk a lot. Um, I think they would say that I can be too busy because I always have things going on – volunteering, really big on community, always trying to make sure that people are connected in one way or another to their community and how they can give back. I’m fun. I think they’d say that I’m fun but I’m kind of odd. Mostly, I am just very busy -oh! And food. I’m big on healthy food and growing and gardening and stuff, so I’m kind of the odd one. But ya, I think that is what they’d describe me as.
What would you sing at karaoke night?
It would have to be country, for sure. It would depend, if it was the beginning of the night I guess I wouldn’t hit someone with too much depressing sounding music but it would probably be a George Strait song. I don’t know what one, though, but George Strait.
And finally, a tough question for the future Registered Dietician. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Oh that’s a tough one! I do love my pasta. I love a good pasta. My favourite pasta is a nice, like very rich Fettuccine. Ah, Fettuccine Alfredo – I guess I’ would say that. In the back of my mind I’m thinking like “make sure you say salad or something like that” but I’d say a nice chicken fettuccine.
