Guest Speaker: Meehae Song

How to Leverage VR for Education and Beyond XR (eXtended Reality) Technology has become an effective medium for many applications, fields from medicine to simulations to education. With technology becoming more accessible and cost-effective, we can now have educators, artists and students start to explore this medium through a variety of apps to start thinking about how we can best leverage XR for different application fields. This session presents how Song uses XR to teach, prototype, and collaborate with students, educators as well as industry professionals. She will showcase ShapesXR and Unity3D demonstrating use of the Meta Quest 2 VR Headset.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Julia Kiernan

Rhetorical Listening in Technological Landscapes: Foregrounding Voices that are not our Own  This session focuses on environmental justice, decolonization, and magical realism via a discussion of the development of an educational video game: Land of the Three Fires. I share some of the pedagogical moves I employ to invite students into these often messy conversations and emphasize Kristina Ratcliffe’s theory of rhetorical listening, which is informed by theories of linguistic racism, anti-racist pedagogy, and intersectionality. (NOTE this session corresponds to Pathways to Indigenization #1, #2, and #3) All are welcome to attend each event and we encourage everyone to register ahead of time for coffee, snacks and a boxed lunch. Teams link will be sent to registered virtual attendees

Guest Speaker: Dr. Julia Kiernan

Closing Session: Enacting Sustainability & Stewardship: At the Intersection of Environmental Justice, Social Media, & Tourism This session examines how far away, out-of-reach landscapes are, via the propagation of associated imagery on social media platforms, important sites of analysis—particularly regarding tourism and travel narratives. To date, little attention has been paid to social media’s impacts on the natural world. Using the lenses of natureculture and solastalgia this session unpacks how nature, as depicted through social media platforms, provokes a range of human-centered emotions that strategically avoid connecting human- and nature-centered distress.
