SUMMARY:COTR Museia: Zombies\, Epidemics\, and Mathematics: How mayors will save the world.
DESCRIPTION:This event is FREE to attend but we do ask that you pre-register online here. \nAbout the Presentation\nThis talk is about zombies. If this displeases you\, then I should tell you that this talk is about Epidemics. If this also displeases you\, perhaps you would be interested to hear that this talk is about math. \nWill all of the humans get bitten and turned into flesh-eating ghouls? Will we run out of food if we shelter in place? Can we kill the zombies faster than they are biting us? Should we run and hide in the country side\, or take refuge in the busy city? \nWe can use mathematics to study a certain situation (Like a zombie epidemic) by building a Mathematical model: combining different competing effects\, and then running simulations to study and understand the different possible outcomes. In this talk\, we will be building a mathematical model of a zombie epidemic\, and using it to understand the choices a wise mayor should make to keep their community safe. \nDr. Benjamin Tippett is a Math instructor at College of the Rockies. \nAbout the Speaker\nBen Tippett\, PhD\nDiscipline: Physics\, Mathematics\, Astronomy\n \nI have been a full-time mathematics and physics instructor since 2012. After instructing at UBC Okanagan for 5 years\, in the autumn of 2018 I began teaching physics\, astronomy and mathematics at the College. \nI completed my bachelor’s degree in Honours Physics in 2003 at UBC\, before earning my master’s degree in Physics from Queens in 2006\, studying general relativity. I then went on to earn my doctoral degree in mathematics from UNB in 2011\, where I studied general relativity and quantum gravity. \nI live in a little house with my wife Bethany and\, in my free time\, enjoy cooking\, eating\, building time machines\, podcasting\, and looking at photos of rabbits on the internet. I also host a podcast\, The Titanium Physicist\, and welcome you to listen in. \nThis event is FREE to attend but we do ask that you pre-register online here.
