College of the Rockies Business students (l-r) Kathleen Faye Chu Nicdao and Michelle Chan, finished with the first and third highest share value at the end of the first component of a nation-wide simulation.

College of the Rockies Business students, Michelle Chan (4th year Bachelor of Business Administration) and Kathleen Faye Chu Nicdao (2nd year Marketing and BBA), finished first and third, respectively, in the first stage of a nation-wide computer simulation. Over 600 university and college students from more than 20 post-secondary institutions across Canada are taking part in the simulation over the winter semester.

Using software created by Praxar, a pioneer in the world of business simulations, participants demonstrate their marketing prowess by identifying the needs of several market segments within the video game industry. Based on scenarios presented during the simulation, students make decisions that typically would need to be made over a five-year period regarding products, pricing, distribution, and promotion.

At the conclusion of each year’s decision-making process, the software uses an algorithm to assign a share value to each competitor’s virtual business. Share value is determined through several factors including overall sales, income, and customer satisfaction. Chan’s marketing decisions in the “first year” led to the highest share value in the simulation with Nicdao receiving the third highest.

“Simulations like these are a great opportunity for students to put what they’re learning in class into action,” said Darrell Bethune, Dean of Business and University Arts and Science. “Michelle and Kathleen are demonstrating the creativity and critical thinking skills that businesses want, and we celebrate their success.”

The full simulation will wrap up in April 2020, at the conclusion of the winter semester.
