Viki Pho

In her final months at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Viki Pho formed meaningful connections with those who cared for her, particularly the nurses.  She was moved to learn that many of them were graduates of College of the Rockies’ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Practical Nurse (PN) programs. Inspired by their dedication, Viki expressed a heartfelt desire to support future nursing students.

Diane Hales

After receiving her diagnosis, Viki developed a special bond with Diane Hales, a fellow patient also battling breast cancer. Their shared journey provided comfort and companionship, even in the face of their illnesses. Tragically, both women passed away from cancer, but their friendship left an indelible mark.

Grieving but determined to honour Viki’s wishes, her partner, Ron Boese, took steps to create a lasting tribute. Recognizing the solace Viki found in Diane’s friendship, Ron joined with Diane’s brother, Frederick Hales to create an enduring legacy. Ron and Frederick each contributed $25,000 to help establish four financial awards names: the Viki Pho Memorial Bursary, Viki Pho Memorial Award, the Diane Hales Memorial Bursary, and the Diane Hales Memorial Award. An additional contribution of $20,000 from College of the Rockies further strengthened the financial awards.

Each spring, four students – two selected based on financial need and two for academic achievement and volunteerism – will receive $500 bursaries or awards.

In addition to fulfilling Viki’s wishes, Ron highlights the vital role College of the Rockies plays in the region. “The College provides an affordable pathway for local students to prepare for the workforce. Many graduates stay in the community, which is especially important in the healthcare field.”

Thanks to the generosity of Ron and Frederick, these awards not only support nursing students but also preserve the legacies of Viki Pho and Diane Hales – two women whose strength continues to inspire.

All four awards are open to both BSN and LPN students. Applications are due at the end of February.
