Mike Calder and BDO Canada: Helping students helps the community

Posted on

BDO Canada LLP – Cranbrook offers accounting, assurance, tax and advisory services to members in the Cranbrook region. With nine College of the Rockies on staff, including partner Mike Calder, they also have a close connection to College of the Rockies alumni.

“We have also recently hired another full-time accounting student and two summer co-op students. We consider the College a strong ongoing source of accounting personnel for our business,” said Calder.

With that in mind, BDO Cranbrook annually contributes to the BDO Canada LLP Scholarship, a $1,000 tuition award presented to a full-time student who has completed the Accounting diploma at the College and is continuing on into the Bachelor of Business Administration: Sustainable Business Practices program.

“BDO is an active member of the community in all of our locations across the country. We strongly believe in business and ethics working together to achieve success for economic, social, and cultural progression,” Calder added. “We believe supporting today’s learners helps shape the business and community leaders of tomorrow. As we draw accounting students from the College, it only makes sense for us to support their educational pursuits.”

Aside from creating a valuable employee pool for the firm, the staff at BDO believe College of the Rockies plays a vital role for the entire region.

“The College offers a vast number of quality educational programs, trades programs, online learning, and adult basic education. No matter what the learning needs or objectives are for area residents, they know they can secure the education or training they desire at the local College, avoiding the need to relocate. This creates a stronger, more vibrant community and helps retain our young, talented leaders of tomorrow.”
