As we continue to celebrate 10 years of the Bachelor of Business Administration: Sustainable Business Practices program, we look back at one of our alumnae – Andrew Skaien – whose education and skills led him to be the top dog at a local veterinary clinic.

Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Andrew Skaien moved to Cranbrook to enjoy the mountain lifestyle.

“I love the area for the biking, skiing, rock climbing, etc.,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”

When he decided to pursue further education, Andrew found the Bachelor of Business Administration program appealing.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career, so I wanted to take something that would help me in pretty much any job in the future. Business seemed like a good opportunity to learn valuable skills while I figured out what I really wanted to do with my life.”

Upon completion of his BBA in 2016, Andrew immediately found work as a receptionist at Steeples Veterinary Clinic. Within six months he was promoted to Director of Public Relations and Marketing,

“That job used a lot of what I learned in the BBA program,” he said. “I built a significant social media following, which I still manage myself, and partnered with local businesses for cross-promotion.”

His hard work did not go unnoticed. When the position of Director of Administration at Steeples became available, it was awarded to Andrew, less than a year after his completion of the BBA.

“I oversee all administrative aspects of the Clinic,” he said. “Even though I had no background in veterinary medicine, the knowledge gained from the College helped me earn this position in such an incredible industry.”

Andrew’s education is also proving to be helpful in some side ventures. He is working with a small group to start a technology-based bookkeeping firm, and manages an Airbnb suite on his property.

“Having such an amazing institution tucked away in the East Kootenays is a blessing. It was the fantastic faculty that reinforced my choice. The small class sizes and personal interaction with the professors made for such a high-quality experience. I can’t speak highly enough of the staff at College of the Rockies, they are truly remarkable.”
