What started as a summer job by the pool has grown into a meaningful and rewarding career in municipal recreation for Emma Davidson.
In 2016, she began working as a lifeguard and over the next several years advanced through aquatics roles, becoming a swim instructor and later an aquatic supervisor. While gaining hands-on experience, she was still exploring what a long-term career path might look like.
That direction became clearer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“At that time, I saw many people experience job loss and instability,” Emma recalls. “I was fortunate to remain employed in a stable municipal role, and that really showed me the value of a career that can provide consistency and security.”
That realization sparked a shift in focus. Recreation was no longer just a job. It became a field with long-term potential.
After researching options, Emma enrolled in College of the Rockies’ Recreation Management Diploma while continuing to work full-time as a Recreation Coordinator.
The ability to balance education and employment proved to be a key advantage.
“I found the online Recreation Management program through the College to be the perfect fit,” she said. “I was able to continue working full-time in my hometown while pursuing an education in an industry I was already passionate about.”
The program not only fit Emma’s lifestyle but also delivered immediate value in the workplace.
“The coursework was directly applicable to what I was doing every day. It made a real difference in how I approached my role and helped me build confidence as I took on more responsibility.”
After completing the diploma, Emma chose to keep building on that momentum by pursuing a Bachelor of Recreation Management at Langara College. The transition between programs was smooth, providing a clear pathway to further education.
“The move from College of the Rockies to Langara was seamless and cohesive,” she said. “It felt like a natural next step.”
Emma graduated with her degree in 2025, equipped with both practical experience and advanced education. That combination quickly paid off when she secured a position in a new city. The opportunity marked an exciting step forward, including relocating from her hometown and taking on new challenges in the field.
Reflecting on her journey, Emma credits both her workplace experience and education for helping shape her career.
The College’s flexible, online delivery made it possible to pursue professional goals without putting life on hold. At the same time, the program strengthened her skills and opened the door to further education and advancement.
Today, Emma continues to build a career grounded in community, stability, and meaningful impact. From lifeguard to recreation professional, her path highlights how practical experience, combined with the right education, can lead to new opportunities and long-term success.
