What if a single course could open the door to a rewarding career helping children learn, grow, and thrive?

At College of the Rockies, becoming an Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) may be more accessible than you realize. In fact, completing just one eligible course can make you eligible to apply for ECEA certification through British Columbia’s Ministry of Children and Family Development, creating a direct pathway into one of the province’s most important and in-demand professions.

A Flexible First Step

For many prospective students, the biggest challenge is knowing where to start. The good news is that you do not need to commit to a full Early Childhood Education program right away.

Students can begin by taking one of two continuous intake courses:

These courses are offered through flexible monthly intakes, making it easier for working adults, career changers, and recent graduates to fit education into their schedules.

Still in high school? These courses are also available through dual credit, allowing you to earn both high school and post-secondary credits while exploring a career in Early Childhood Education.

You do not need to be accepted into the full Early Childhood Education program to enrol in these courses.

From Classroom to Career

After successfully completing either Health, Safety and Nutrition or Child Growth and Development and obtaining ECEA certification, you may be eligible to work in licensed childcare settings throughout BC and gain valuable hands-on experience while making a difference in the lives of children and families.

Working as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant is more than a job. It is an opportunity to contribute to children’s earliest experiences of learning, belonging, and discovery. Every day brings new opportunities to support young learners as they build confidence, develop relationships, and explore the world around them.

A Career With Purpose and Opportunity

The demand for qualified early childhood educators continues to grow across the region and the province, creating strong opportunities for those interested in entering the field.

Beyond the personal rewards of supporting children’s development, there are also financial incentives available. Certified Early Childhood Educators working in eligible B.C. childcare centres qualify for a provincial wage enhancement of $6 per hour. In the Columbia Basin region, eligible educators may also receive an additional $3 per hour wage subsidy through Columbia Basin Trust, further strengthening the value of an ECE career.

Your Path Doesn’t Have to End There

For many students, becoming an ECEA is just the beginning.

Starting with one course allows students to explore the profession, gain experience, and determine whether they would like to continue their education. Many students later return to complete additional credentials, including:

This step-by-step approach allows you to build your qualifications over time while advancing your career.

Start With Just One Course

Whether you’re looking for a meaningful new career, considering a career change, or exploring educational options after high school, becoming an Early Childhood Educator Assistant is a practical and accessible first step.

After all, every great career begins with a first step. In Early Childhood Education, that first step could be just one course.
