COTR hosting STEAM camps in Cranbrook and Fernie

Posted on

Keep your child engaged, curious, and having fun this summer with College of the Rockies’ hands-on STEAM Camps – offered at both Cranbrook and Fernie campuses.

STEAM Camps blend science, technology, engineering, arts, and math into hands-on challenges and exciting adventures. Campers develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, build confidence and independence, form new friendships, and explore real-world STEAM careers, all within a supportive, low-pressure environment.

Children aged 8 to 13 in Fernie can dive into the world of LEGO Mindstorms at the Fernie Campus from July 7 to 11. In this immersive LEGO Robotics camp, participants will build and code robots to tackle fun, team-based challenges and adventures.

Instructed by a seasoned LEGO robotics expert, the program emphasizes teamwork, inclusion, impact, fun, discovery, and innovation. The camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a registration deadline of July 3. Cost for the program is $300.

Teens aged 12 – 16 in Cranbrook are invited to Build-it Bootcamp: Lasers and Layers, running July 14 to 18. The College is partnering with Community Futures East Kootenay to offer this immersive camp at YXC Makerspace in the Ground Floor Coworking Space. Participants will learn about digital design and manufacturing using laser cutters, 3D printers, and other creative technologies. Campers will bring their ideas to life through real-world tools and techniques, guided by expert instructors. Participants should bring their own laptop with a mouse.  For a $300 sign-up fee, Build-it Bootcamp will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration closes on July 10.

Young explorers aged 5 to 10 years old can join the 5-Day Outdoor Adventure program at the Cranbrook campus either July 28 to August 1 or August 11 to 15. Led by experienced Wildsight educators, these nature-based camps help children connect with the outdoors, spark a love for science, and build confidence and creativity through exploration and play.

Camps run from 9:00 am – 4:00 p.m. daily. Each camp costs $280 and registration deadlines are July 24 for the first session and August 7 for the second.

Fee relief is available for all Camps. To find out more and apply for a subsidy, email Paul Tiege at ptiege@cotr.bc.ca.

Feedback from the parents of previous STEAM Camp participants has included, “My kids absolutely loved the summer STEAM Camps. I would sign them up for a month if they were offered! They still talk about it and loved that they broke up the day with water park trips.”
