When Aruni Kalupahana arrived in Cranbrook in March 2024, she brought with her not only an impressive academic background, but also a deep passion for storytelling, creativity, and lifelong learning. Now a graduate of the Post-Degree Diploma in Sustainable Business at College of the Rockies, her journey reflects resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to making meaningful connections, both in the classroom and beyond.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Aruni was drawn to the East Kootenay by both ambition and a desire for a fresh start. With credentials in art and design, business administration, and marketing—and experience as a published author and entrepreneur, Aruni chose College of the Rockies as the place to continue her growth. The region’s natural beauty and strong sense of community made Cranbrook feel like home.

“I wanted to continue my education while living in a peaceful community surrounded by nature,” she explains. “The mountains, forests, and welcoming environment made it the perfect place to start a new chapter.”

A Learning Experience Rooted in Community

At College of the Rockies, Aruni found more than academic achievements, she found connection. Small class sizes, supportive instructors, and an inclusive learning environment allowed her to build meaningful relationships and confidence as a learner.

One of her most impactful experiences came through Introduction to Indigenous Studies (INDG 101), a course that introduced her to Indigenous histories, perspectives, and ways of knowing. Through storytelling and discussion, Aruni gained new ways of understanding identity, culture, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

“The course showed me the power of storytelling to preserve knowledge and connect people across generations,” she says.

These lessons resonated deeply with her own background as a writer. Drawing parallels between Indigenous histories and Sri Lanka’s colonial past, Aruni found new inspiration for her creative work while developing a deeper appreciation for empathy, listening, and multiple perspectives.

Leadership Through Empathy and Voice

Recognized for her leadership in the classroom, Aruni sees the role not as authority, but as connection.

“To me, leadership is about having the courage to share your story while also listening to others,” she explains.

Her approach helped create a respectful, engaged learning environment, one where diverse voices were welcomed and valued. Over time, her confidence grew as she overcame the challenges of adapting to a new country and education system.

“That first step is often the hardest,” she reflects. “But once you take it, you feel free, almost like a bird finding its wings.” [

Strength Through Challenge

Aruni’s journey has not been without hardship. She credits much of her motivation to her late mother, whose influence continues to guide her values and drive her forward.

“Her dreams for me give me the strength to keep moving forward,” she says.

Through perseverance and dedication, Aruni successfully completed her program and achieved strong academic results, an accomplishment she views as a testament to resilience and self-belief.

Looking Ahead

As she graduates, Aruni is focused on gaining professional experience while continuing to grow academically and creatively. She hopes to pursue doctoral studies in the future, contributing to her field through research, storytelling, and lifelong learning.

Success for Aruni is no longer defined by grades or status. Instead, it is about living with purpose, compassion, and integrity.

“Success means gaining the wisdom to live a meaningful and peaceful life, and continuing to learn every day,” she says.

A Message to Future Students

To those beginning their journey at College of the Rockies, Aruni offers simple but powerful advice:

“Be open to learning, listen with respect, and don’t be afraid to share your voice. Your perspective matters.”
