Neha Parmar’s journey to College of the Rockies reflects curiosity, determination, and a strong commitment to learning.
Originally from Punjab, India, Neha came to Canada with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mathematics and a desire to expand her education in a way that would allow her to make a meaningful impact. She chose College of the Rockies for its supportive environment, smaller class sizes, and hands-on approach to learning. This experience helped her grow not only academically, but personally as well.
Now completing her Post-Degree Diploma in Sustainable Business Practices, Neha has focused her studies on understanding how organizations can balance economic success with environmental responsibility and social impact. “Sustainability is becoming increasingly important,” she says, “and I wanted to learn how businesses can operate responsibly while creating positive change.”
Throughout her time at the College, Neha has stood out for her thoughtful approach to learning and her leadership in the classroom. For her, leadership is not about speaking the most. It is about creating space for others. “It means listening respectfully, encouraging participation, and helping build an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas,” she explains.
One of the most impactful experiences in her program was in Introduction to Indigenous Studies (INDG 101), a course that deepened her understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives. Through meaningful discussions and reflection, Neha gained a greater awareness of Canada’s past and present, including the lasting impacts of residential schools. “It reinforced the importance of listening, empathy, and learning from different voices,” she says.
As an international student, the course also connected to her own reflections on identity, culture, and belonging. Engaging with classmates from diverse backgrounds broadened her perspective and strengthened her appreciation for learning as a shared, collaborative experience.
Since arriving in Canada, Neha has grown significantly in confidence. What once felt intimidating, speaking up in class and sharing her ideas, has become one of her strengths. She now actively participates in discussions and approaches complex topics with openness and curiosity.
Neha credits her success to strong time management, consistency, and a genuine passion for learning. More importantly, her experience has reshaped what success means to her. “Success is more than good grades,” she says. “It is about growth, critical thinking, understanding different perspectives, and using what you learn to make a positive contribution.”
Looking ahead, Neha hopes to build a career that brings together her business knowledge and commitment to sustainability by working with organizations that prioritize ethical practices and long-term impact.
For students who may feel hesitant to participate in class, her advice is simple and powerful. “Your perspective matters. You do not need to have all the answers. Learning happens when you ask questions and are willing to engage.”
Neha’s journey is a reminder that education is not just about gaining knowledge. It is about growing as a person, building connections, and finding your voice along the way.
