Carolyn McLean’s journey with College of the Rockies began in 1992, when she attended violin lessons at the Cranbrook Campus. Little did she know, this would be the start of an ongoing relationship with the College that would lead to a fulfilling career as an Education Assistant, and ultimately, a future as a certified teacher.
Returning to the College in 2001 to complete the Adult Basic Education program, Carolyn then pursued her dream of becoming an Education Assistant (EA), graduating from the program in 2020. In 2024, Carolyn completed her Pre-Education certificate and is currently enrolled in the East Kootenay Teacher Education program, held at the Cranbrook Campus in partnership with the University of Victoria.
Reflecting on her time in the EA program, Carolyn is especially appreciative of the hands-on learning approach where she could apply her lessons directly in a school classroom. That experience not only allowed her to develop teaching techniques but also to understand how to foster an inclusive environment where every student feels valued. The collaborative environment at the College, with the opportunity to exchange ideas with instructors and peers, was a key factor in her professional development.
As a student during the COVID-19 pandemic, Carolyn also appreciated the College’s flexibility, which allowed her to continue her studies and to receive her certificate despite the challenges of the pandemic.
Crediting the College for providing a solid foundation in educational theory and practical teaching strategies, Carolyn also found the focus on inclusivity and diversity, along with the community-focused atmosphere, helped her gain the skills necessary to support students’ diverse needs.
“As a single mother, I’ve felt incredibly supported throughout my academic journey,” she shared. “If someone is considering attending College of the Rockies, I would highly recommend it for its supportive and engaging learning environment. The small class sizes and approachable faculty allow for personalized attention, and the practical, hands-on experiences prepare students for real-world challenges. It’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking to further their studies.”
A volunteer coach and committee member with the Special Olympics since 2018, Carolyn’s passion for helping others is clear. Add to that her passion for education and her drive to support students’ success and she undoubtedly will be a compassionate and effective teacher, continuing to inspire and empower the next generation of learners.
