Our program is one of the only programs offered in Canada that is available fully online so you can study and earn your diploma while continuing to work.

This program starts in September each year. Part-time students applying in the Winter or Spring semester should select University General Studies as their program when applying.

Our online courses are designed to provide flexibility while still keeping students engaged and connected to course learning.

Most courses include:

• A detailed weekly overview and learning outcomes
• Assigned readings
• Instructor PowerPoints or lecture materials
• Weekly assignments and applied projects
• Online discussion forums and class interaction
• Real-world recreation and community-based learning activities

All online courses are delivered asynchronously, allowing students the flexibility to complete coursework around work, family, coaching, and other commitments. Many students successfully balance the program while working either part-time or full-time.

The amount of time students spend each week varies depending on the course, assignment deadlines, and individual learning style. As a general guideline, many students report spending approximately:

• 4-6 hours per week for one online course
• 8-12 hours per week for two courses
• Additional time during larger assignments or projects

The program is designed to be manageable and flexible for working professionals while still providing meaningful, practical learning experiences.

Can I take this program online?

Yes. The program is available fully online or through a blend of face to face and online course.  

Is the Recreation Management Program asynchronous?

Yes. All online courses are delivered asynchronously, allowing students the flexibility to complete coursework around work, family, coaching, and other commitments. While there may be assignment deadlines and opportunities for online interaction, students are not required to attend scheduled live classes.  Some course may require a set date/time for exams but this will be communicated well in advance.

How much time should I expect each week?

Plan for approximately 4-5 hours per week per online course.

Can I work while taking the program?

Yes, many students do. Part-time study may be a good option for students balancing work, family, coaching, or community commitments. We also have many full-time students who also work full-time jobs.

Is there a practicum or field placement?

Yes. Diploma students complete a 140-hour work placement (RECR 231) or students may choose to participate in COOP-150 (Summer Co-op Work Term of 420-500 hours) if they would like a more robust experience.

Can I complete my work placement through my current job in the recreation field?

Yes, if your position is within the recreation field and your supervisor approves the arrangement.

I’m a mature student and have been out of school for a while. Will I be successful in this program?

Absolutely. Many students in the Recreation Management program are mature learners returning to school after time away from academics. Others are already working in recreation, coaching, tourism, fitness, or community services while completing the program. Courses are designed to be practical, supportive, and connected to real-world experiences, helping students build confidence while developing new skills. The flexible online format also allows students to balance school with work, family, and other commitments.
