In November 2021, Randy “Fritz” Sandberg tragically passed away after a workplace vehicle accident, a loss that deeply impacted his colleagues at Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting.
Randy was a gentle, loving, caring, wonderful man who will forever be remembered for his smile, caring heart, and loyalty to his friends and family. He kept everyone around him rolling in laughter and could find humour in almost every situation.
Randy had a deep love of family, fishing, camping, traveling, and helping others out in any way possible. As the Mechanical Trades Supervisor – Heavy Duty Mechanic with Mainroad East Kootenay, he was involved in the mentoring and coaching of the other mechanics.
As many of Mainroad’s mechanics have taken an interest in upgrading courses at College of the Rockies or are graduates of the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician program, Mainroad felt it appropriate to honour Randy’s legacy by creating the Randy “Fritz” Sandberg Memorial Bursary. This Bursary will be awarded to students entering the College’s Heavy Duty Equipment Technician foundation program.
The College provides avenues for those seeking skilled, challenging, and rewarding careers without wanting to complete a degree from a traditional university.
“Randy was always the first one to reach out and help others, we can’t think of a better way to honour him than through helping future heavy duty mechanics,” said Noel Mankey, Mainroad VP, Operations.
