Returning to school as an adult was initially intimidating for Elyssa Starchuk, but after meeting with an education advisor at College of the Rockies, she left feeling both supported and inspired. That conversation, coupled with a deeply personal experience, helped her realize that the Human Service Worker program was the perfect fit for her.
“After my 16-year-old daughter suffered a stroke, I felt a strong desire to give back and support others who are facing similar challenges,” she said. “During our time at BC Children’s Hospital, I experienced firsthand the invaluable support of social workers and human service professionals. Their compassion and guidance had a profound impact on me, reaffirming my belief that having caring, supportive people around can make all the difference in life’s most difficult moments.”
Elyssa thoroughly every aspect of the Human Service Worker program – from the courses to the instructors. After graduation, she took a well-deserved break before diving into her job search. Soon after, the Cranbrook Food Bank, where she had completed her first practicum, reached out with a job opportunity. Having thoroughly enjoying her time there, she was excited to accept the position of Logistics Coordinator. Just a few months after that, she was promoted to Operations Manager, a role she is passionate about.
“My education has thoroughly prepared me for this position,” Elyssa explained. “Through my studies, I developed strong communication skills, learned to recognize and address personal biases, and gained a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives. I also learned how to navigate difficult and emotional situations with empathy and professionalism.”
The program also gave Elyssa a more profound understanding of the unique needs of individuals across different age groups and abilities. These insights have enhanced her professional capabilities and made her a more compassionate and well-rounded person.
What once seemed like an overwhelming experience turned into an incredibly rewarding one for Elyssa, and she encourages others to take the leap and attend the College.
“Go for it! It’s amazing,” she said. “They truly care and want you to succeed. I’m so happy I did it.”
