Growing up in Kimberley, Megan Howe always had a love for Earth sciences, inspired by exploring the Kootenays as a child. When she enrolled at College of the Rockies, her instructors encouraged her to see that passion as a pathway to a career.
At the College, Megan completed two years of University Sciences courses which she then transferred to the University of Northen British Columbia toward her Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography. She appreciated the opportunity to stay close to home, save money, and still receive a high-quality education. “I most enjoyed the field trips, guest speakers, and instructors who were passionate in their teaching. I also enjoyed tutoring other students, which helped me solidify what I learned in class,” she recalls.
Since then, Megan has been building a diverse career. For the past five years, she has worked summers as a junior geologist with Terralogic Exploration Inc., conducting mapping, prospecting, and geochemical surveys across B.C. and Northern Saskatchewan. In the winter, she joins the Kimberley Alpine Resort Ski Patrol, where she helps injured skiers and completes daily weather and snowpack observations. She is also pursuing further training through the Canadian Avalanche Association in snow science and avalanche safety, with the goal of a career in avalanche forecasting.
Megan credits her time at College of the Rockies with preparing her for these opportunities: “The College afforded me the chance to connect with professors and classmates, which helped me grow in confidence when applying for jobs and meeting new people. Small classes gave us time to practice, present, and support one another.”
Her advice for future students? “It’s a great idea to start your degree at the College. You’ll benefit from smaller classes, supportive instructors, and the chance to save money before transferring to university.”
