Valedictorian
Information and Guidelines
The Valedictorian is the representative of the College of the Rockies graduating class. They deliver a formal address to commemorate the time spent by all graduates at the College to all fellow graduating students, faculty, and guests at Convocation. The speech will provide an opportunity for reflection and celebration for the graduates towards their Certificate, Diploma or Degree. The Valedictorian is a position of honour and esteem, who has made connections with fellow students. Sharing the excitement of Convocation is key to enacting the role of Valedictorian.
Eligibility
Nominees for Valedictorian will be considered according to the criteria listed below:
- Must be a College of the Rockies student graduating at the upcoming Convocation
- Demonstrated involvement in the College and the community (e.g. volunteering, peer tutoring, Student Life or Student Association involvement)
- Preference will be given to nominees who have maintained a minimum GPA of 80% throughout their program
Nomination Period: April 15 – May 01
Nominations for Valedictorian open April 15. All nominations must be submitted by May 01. The Selection Committee will review nominations between May 2 and May 15 and the selected nominee for Valedictorian will be contacted.
General Guidelines
- Nominators must be a College of the Rockies employee or student. Student nominators must be graduating at the upcoming Convocation.
- Nominators can nominate one student per academic year.
- One Valedictorian will be selected to attend the Convocation Ceremony in June.
- Nominators may be contacted for verification and confirmation of ceremony involvement as part of the selection process.
The Registrar’s Office will verify:
- the student’s academic record
- the student’s eligibility to be the Valedictorian of their graduating class.
Structure of the Selection Committee
The Selection Committee shall be comprised of the following:
- Registrar (or designate)
- Director, Student Engagement (or designate)
- Vice President, Student Success (or designate)
- Vice President, Academic (or designate)

The Selection Committee will focus on the following areas:
- GPA
- College Contributions
- Student Activities
- Community Activities
- Values
