The College hosting a variety of events between June 24 and 27
College of the Rockies will finish June with a series of events celebrating Pride Month. Coordinated by volunteers from various College departments, this marks the College’s first official Pride celebration. Students, employees, and members of our communities are invited to take part in the kickoff event on June 24 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
“June 24 will be an exciting occasion at our college as we mark a historic milestone with our very first Pride flag-raising event to kick off our week of Pride celebrations,” said Robin Hicks, Vice President Academic. “Pride Month is a time dedicated to honoring the LGBTQ2S+ community and recognizing their diversity, resilience, contributions, struggles, and achievements. We acknowledge the importance of an environment where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
The flag-raising will take place outdoors in front of the College’s main entrance with an announcement to follow inside the campus’ main entrance foyer. Rainbow cupcakes and beverages will be available for all those in attendance.
Throughout the remainder of the week there will be a variety of opportunities for students and employees to engage in activities before the public is welcomed back on June 27 for the screening of a pair of movies. Two Soft Things, Two Hard Things will be shown in the College’s main lecture theatre (room KC250) at 5:30 p.m., while a showing of Kinky Boots will take place at 7:00 p.m., also in room KC250. There is no admission fee for the films.
Two Soft Things, Two Hard things is a 2016 film which depicts a small group in Nunavut preparing for a seminal LGBTQ Pride celebration in the Arctic. Through the group’s experience, the film explores how colonization and religion have shamed and erased traditional Inuit beliefs about sexuality and family structure and how, 60 years later, a new generation of Inuit are actively ‘unshaming’ their past.
Kinky Boots is a 2005 British comedy-drama based on a true story. The film tells the story of Charlie, a struggling shoe factory owner, who forms an unlikely partnership with Lola, a drag queen, to save his business. Nominated for a Golden Globe Award, Kinky Boots has gone on to be a highly successful Broadway musical.
