CertainTeed Canada is committed to sustainable development and partnership with the local community. When the opportunity arose to contribute to College of the Rockies’ Dean’s Equipment Fund for Environmental Science during the College’s 2020 Giving Tuesday campaign, Steve Rasilainen, Director of Mining Operations – North America, saw it as an opportunity to further both of those commitments.
A building materials manufacturing company, CertainTeed operates a gypsum mine in Windermere, BC. Ore from that mine is sent to Calgary and Vancouver gypsum board plants, as well as to agricultural customers for fertilizer, and to cement plants as one component of the cement process.
CertainTeed Canada owns over 60 production and distribution facilities in North America and employs over 5700 workers. Their Windermere mine has been in operation for 70 years and they are in the process of opening a new mine east of Canal Flats. That mine is expected to be operational in 2022.
“We see our contribution to the Dean’s Equipment Fund for Environmental Science as an investment in our communities and in potential future CertainTeed employees,” Rasilainen said. “The education students receive at the College is an important step in helping to improve the world of tomorrow.”
