Do you remember Josie.  We did a 10 Questions with… with her a short time ago. She is an education pre-certificate student and a Student Ambassador.  In the following blog, Josie shares her love of rock climbing and discusses the new climbing facility in Cranbrook – ARQ Mountain Centre.

College of the Rockies is located in an area where students can enjoy a great variety of recreational activities. The East Kootenays has a lot to offer in the form of outdoor recreation, but it also has many exciting indoor activities to enjoy, such as indoor rock climbing.

Climbing is a great activity for those who want to challenge their body and mind. From 1997 to 2016 College of The Rockies had a wall located in the gymnasium.  Due to the need for repair and outdated equipment, “The Peaks Climbing Wall” was taken down.  Shortly after, Gord McArthur and Fraser Bowden succeeded in creating their dream of opening ARQ Mountain Centre, an indoor climbing facility. The ARQ hopes to inspire both those new to climbing and those who are experienced.

ARQ provides a welcoming atmosphere that is a perfect place to make new friends in the community. In addition to a climbing wall, they also have a fitness area, retail outlet, cafe, bouldering area, and offer yoga classes.  ARQ offers College of The Rockies students a special discounted rate. Climbing equipment can be rented from the facility and the awesome staff  at the ARQ can provide instruction.

Rock climbing is a great way for students who are new to the area to make friends and meet the locals. For students who are familiar with Cranbrook it can provide an opportunity to socialize with folks they never would have met otherwise. The ARQ Mountain Centre in Cranbrook is a great place to seek inspiration.
