Running With Purpose

Doris is the Director of Student Affairs at College of the Rockies.  She is also an avid runner.  She began running because physical fitness is important to her but she has found it has a great impact on her all around well-being.

Having already completed three half marathons, Doris was intrigued when her daughter mentioned a run in Reykjavik, Iceland.  This would not only be a chance to challenge herself physically but also raise funds for a important cause – fighting diabetes and to travel somewhere new.

“Iceland is a fascinating country with unique landscapes and because I love to travel to places where I have the opportunity to learn about new cultures, this was right up my alley,” she says.

Doris joined Team Diabetes and signed up for the 21.1 km run.  Then began the training.

“Being a part of Team Diabetes gave things a different perspective.  One team member who was living with the disease, compared having diabetes to training for a long-distance race.  Diabetes management requires dedication to making healthy lifestyle choices such as eating a healthier diet and committing to an exercise program and you’re in it for the long haul.  When you realize some people have to live with diabetes for their entire lives, it makes the temporary discomfort of training for a half marathon easier.”

Doris completed her half marathon on August 22, 2015.  Not only did she achieve a personal best time – but Team Diabetes was able to raise over $265,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association.  “The contribution I received from family, friends and colleagues on behalf of the cause meant a lot to me and inspired me to reach this goal,” Doris concludes.

Way to go, Doris.  We’re so proud of you!
