Course Overview

Are you thinking of volunteering in the Community, or do you want to learn more about supporting people who are palliative and/or nearing end of life? This “Companioning the Dying’ course will help prepare you to assist individuals and their families and caregivers with palliative and end-of-life support.

Companioning the Dying’ will cover topics such as the difference between hospice and palliative care including the concept of the Circle of Care. The course will also review: the trajectory and signs and symptoms of a life limiting diagnosis; the role of a volunteer including the different                                skills for active listening; hospice volunteer dos and don’t s; signs and symptoms for when a person is getting closer to dying; Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID); self-care for the volunteer/care giver; the principles of hospice companioning and the needs of reconciliation for grief that the individuals go through as they experience different losses.
