Toward Decolonizing Pedagogy Series

September 23

This seven-week program kicks off the week of September 23rd and runs to the week of November 4. Specific meeting times will be scheduled based on participant availability. Whether concepts such as reconciliation, decolonization, and Indigenization are new to you or looking to deepen your understanding, this Series offers time and space for building insights and practical approaches toward decolonizing teaching. This Series will help you:
• Develop an appreciation for the historical and ongoing impact of colonialism in higher education.
• Gain an understanding of the interconnected yet distinct concepts of reconciliation, decolonization, and Indigenization within the Canadian educational context.
• Explore how colonial power structures manifest at various levels of the education system, including in curricula and classroom interactions.
• Recognize the critical role educators play in the decolonization process, both within the institution and the curriculum.
Throughout this journey, you’ll be introduced to a 4-part model that guides you toward decolonizing your teaching practice. This model encourages you to increase your awareness of decolonial issues, reflect on your own position and perspectives, critically evaluate your teaching methods, and commit to continuous learning and unlearning.
