Overview
Timber scalers are responsible for measuring and grading timber harvests to determine their volume, quality, and commercial value using standards set by the Province of British Columbia. They are a critical part of the forest industry, as their scale data informs:
- how much stumpage is paid to the government
- supports buying and selling transactions
- ensures accountability and compliance throughout the timber supply chain
This micro-credential provides comprehensive skills in log scaling principles, including:
- accurate log measurement
- volume and quality assessment
- adherence to legislative and regulatory requirements
- proficiency with essential scaling tools and techniques
Upon successful completion of this program students will be eligible to write the BC Timber Scaling Exam. Throughout this program, special emphasis will be placed on supporting students in mastering the math components of this program, including volume calculations, defect deductions, scaling data analysis, and applying mathematical concepts accurately under exam conditions.
This program is offered through our Gold Creek campus. For questions contact cranbrookce@cotr.bc.ca or call 250-489-8242.
