Kate McWhirter, BEd

Discipline/Teaching Area: Child, Youth, and Family Studies / Education Assistant Specialty

I joined the CYFS team at the College of the Rockies in 2019. Before that time, over 20 years, I held a variety of teaching positions as a classroom teacher, a student services teacher, and an administrator. The most valuable and memorable years for me within the K-12 education system were the 12 years I had teaching kindergarten, the variety of experiences within the role of a student services teacher, and the 7 years as Vice Principal.

Some of my passions within education include supporting challenging behaviour, Trauma-Informed practice, Kindergarten Readiness, Inclusion, and Universal Design for Learning.

In my free time, I enjoy adventures in the Kootenays, spending time with family and friends, bonfires, painting, reading, listening to music, and boxing. I am a member and a coach at Cranbrook Eagles Boxing Club and an Official for Boxing BC. I love to practice gratitude daily and celebrate the little things!

I am so grateful to be a part of the team at the College of the Rockies! It feeds my passions for professionalism, best practice, connection, inclusion, and the necessity to move with the contemporary trends and issues of the field. I love my job where I connect with and guide students and work with amazing people!
