Sometimes life throws you a curveball. For Barbie Torres, who had been a hairstylist for over 15 years, that curveball came in the form of a brain injury that affected her memory. As a result, despite her many years of experience, Barbie enrolled in College of the Rockies’ Hairstylist program in 2022 to relearn the theory components of the program.
Considering her circumstances, having support while she re-learned her trade was incredibly important. She found that in Hairstylist instructor, Gwen Stewart.
“Gwen knew what had happened to me and was so understanding about what I needed from the program and what I didn’t,” Barbie said. “She’s a kind, funny, sensitive woman who is very passionate about the beauty industry and she went over and above for me in the program. She taught me that success must come from within and provided remarkable guidance to me. I can’t thank her enough.”
Barbie also spent time in Upgrading for Academic and Career Entry (UACE), the College’s adult upgrading program, where she found even more support.
“I must say Amber & Allison are fabulous! They are very hands on and there to help anyone succeed.”
After completing the hairstylist program, Barbie studied to also become a Nail Technology Educator through Techni Nails Alberta, leading to her certification as a Master Nail Educator.
In May 2024, Barbie proudly opened Bizzy Bear Cub Cuts, a children’s-based hair salon which has proven to be quite the success.
“We have been nominated for New Business of the Year and will be at the Gala on October 25, 2024,” she said. “We also have been presented with a Global Recognition Award and have been nominated for a Canadian Prize award 2025.”
Having gone through the program, Barbie would recommend it to others, certain that future students will get a wonderful education. She saves her main praise for Gwen, however.
“I want to thank Gwen for building me up through some difficult experiences I had while attending the College. She is a wonderful person and an amazing instructor.”
