Introduction to Prose Fiction

This course introduces students to the genre of prose fiction focusing on short fiction and the novel. In this course, students will read works by authors from diverse cultural and historical contexts while learning the foundational skills needed to analyze and produce academic writing about prose fiction. This course examines how narrative techniques and genre conventions shape meaning and encourages students to consider how literature reflects and challenges social and cultural contexts of their production and reception. This course emphasizes reading, research, and writing.

Requisites:

  • Complete all of the following
    • Earned a minimum grade of C+ (65%) in at least 1 of the following:
      • ENST 12 - English Studies 12
      • ENFP 12 - English First Peoples 12
      • ENGL090 - Provincial English: Literature-based (0)
    • Corequisites: ENGL 100 is recommended for students who need to focus on composition skills.
