Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprenticeship

Program Description:

This program offers technical and practical training related to:

Servicing and repairing hydraulic brakes, hydraulic power brakes and air brakes, describing and servicing hydraulic systems and components, describing electricity and servicing electrical systems, servicing and diagnosing frames, steering and suspension systems, servicing, repairing and diagnosing trailer components, describing, diagnosing and repairing heating and air conditioning systems, and identifying and servicing structural components. Occupational skills such as operating equipment, welding, rigging, servicing bearing and seals and use of tools and shop equipment are also developed. This program includes classroom theory, demonstrations and practical hands-on training in a heavy-duty mechanic shop setting. Safe work practices related to the heavy-duty equipment trade are taught and reinforced throughout the program.

Rebuilding of diesel engines, servicing and repair of engine support systems, engine brakes and retarders, spark ignition engine fuel supply systems, diesel engine fuel supply systems, the use of electrical test equipment in order to test and repair electrical circuits.

Power transfer systems including the diagnosing and repairing of clutches, manual transmissions, automated systems, automatic transmissions and torque converters, drivelines, drive axels, final drives, driveline retarders, winches and power take-offs and transfer cases.

Diagnosing and repairing advanced hydraulic systems, servicing, diagnosing and repairing electric drive systems, diagnosing and repairing wheeled equipment steering, track machine steering, and undercarriage, as well as, diagnosing and repairing working attachments and pneumatic systems.
