This program combines flexible online learning with a hands-on, work integrated learning (WIL) component.
You’ll build key skills in areas like:
- how to safely install, connect, and maintain grid-tied solar PV systems
- making electrical connections
- performing quality checks
- troubleshooting system issues
- key safety procedures such as lock-out/tag-out and proper tool use
Upon successful completion of this program, you will receive a Solar PV Systems and Installation Certificate of Achievement (Continuing Education).
Course Descriptions
Module 1: Introduction to Clean Energy Technologies
In this module, you will learn about:
- solar, wind, hydro, biomass, bio-energy, and geothermal energy technologies in different regions of Canada
- the benefits and challenges of clean energy technologies, including environmental, social, and technical trade-offs
- the financial implications of adopting clean energy technologies for individuals and organizations, including incentives, return on investment, and lifecycle costs
- identify available incentives and financing mechanisms for organizations and individuals to adopt clean energy technologies
Module 2: Introduction to Solar Photovoltaic Systems
In this module, you will learn about:
- the fundamental science and concepts behind solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
- how solar PV systems generate power
- the foundational electrical concepts behind solar PV power generation
- the different types of solar PV system equipment and their uses
- the factors that impact solar PV system performance
Module 3: Solar Photovoltaic Installation
In this module, you will learn about:
- how to utilize information from system documentation to support proper installation and commissioning
- how to install a racking system and perform mechanical attachment of modules according to manufacturer specifications and industry standards
- practices and procedures for managing wiring in solar PV system installations
- industry-standard safety practices, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fall arrest and protection procedures
Admission Requirements
You should know how to use a computer and the required software for the program. You should be comfortable communicating to the instructor and other students online (using email and discussion boards).
At least three years of work or volunteer experience in any sector, which can be non-consecutive and completed in Canada or abroad. Proficient English language skills are recommended along with:
- Good communication skills
- Computer and internet skills
Minimum Computer Skills:
Students need to be able to use the required software required for the program and should be able to perform the following:
- Use a web browser
- Create and save documents
- Locate and upload a file
- Send and receive email
Technical Requirements:
To ensure the best learning online learning experience, you will need:
- a good computer
- a reliable internet connection
- knowledge of Microsoft Word
Note: Microsoft Office 365 suite of products is provided free to all registered students for the duration of the program.
(Apple products should be able to run the Microsoft Office 365 applications needed for this program, however there is no IT service support available for it. Students are responsible for getting their own software if their operating system/device doesn’t run the free programs provided.)

Recommended resources and reading material should be available for free, either online or through library resources.
Computers and Technology
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have the appropriate technology (computer and internet) to complete the program. Participants will have access to Microsoft Office 365 software for free during the program.
