For the love of numbers

It was in her high school accounting class in India where Prabhmani Goraya first discovered her love for numbers, data, and being challenged in her work.

“I realized how much I like to exercise my analytical skills. There is always a new situation to deal with and new challenges which is what I like most about accounting and why I chose it as my career,” she said. “I enjoy dealing with different industries and find solving complex problems very satisfying.”

Prabhmani’s pursuit of an accounting career led her from India to College of the Rockies where she enrolled in the Accounting diploma program.

“I always wanted to come to Canada for my post-secondary education,” she said. “After high school I did some research and found that Canada has so much to offer international students. There are unlimited options for career development, better employment opportunities, diversity, and quality of life.”

Knowing Prabhmani’s desire to study in a small and quiet area in BC, her friend, who had come to Canada earlier, recommended College of the Rockies.

“College of the Rockies’ Cranbrook campus was a perfect match for what I was looking for,” she said. “I checked the College’s website and realized that they offered a wide range of courses, including the one I wanted to enrol in. The tuition fees are also very reasonable, one can afford to attend school while also enjoying the beauty of this place. Honestly, College of the Rockies is exactly what I wanted and I’m very thankful that I chose it.”

The College must have been a good fit for Prabhmani; she is now enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Practices (BBA) program.

“I love the environment of the College. Everyone is so welcoming,” she said. “It is diverse, and all the staff members are really nice, supportive, and helpful. There are leadership opportunities, support, and the chance to make connections. I appreciated being able study and live in a close-knit community while having access to all services and facilities. Classes are designed in a way to provide great opportunities to interact with both instructors and classmates, and the financial aid and scholarship programs are great motivation for all students.”

While continuing her education in the BBA program, Prabhmani is also working at a local Chartered Professional Accounting office as a Junior Accountant. After completing her degree, she will begin preparing for the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) program and feels her experience at the College has helped her to succeed.

“I received solid knowledge of accounting, accounting software, and teamwork in my courses. The broad range of accounting courses provided me a great base and knowledge to apply in my current role,” she said. “I would like to express a special thanks to my accounting instructors, Kevin Boehmer and Garry McPherson. They are very knowledgeable and I’m lucky and thankful to have had them as my instructors.”

When asked if she had anything to say to other’s considering attending College of the Rockies, Prabhmani had some sage advice.

“Don’t get distracted with the hurdles in your way. Just keep your focus on what you want to achieve. If you are considering attending College of the Rockies, remember that at the College every student gets everything they need to succeed. Don’t even think about it – just enroll.”
