Families are about creating strong relationships and providing a sense of belonging.

On May 15 we recognize the importance of family through International Day of Families. The United Nations (UN), recognizing the family as the basic unit of society, established this Day in 1993 to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic processes affecting them.

This International Day of Families is unlike any other in recent history. Though many are using this time together as a way to grow even closer, the stress of the situation can put strains on families who are simultaneously finding many community supports are temporarily unavailable or available in a reduced capacity. Now, more than ever, we need to be there for one another.

If you are able, consider giving to the Food Bank and other help organizations in your local community. If you’re looking for a longer-term means of supporting families going forward, consider the many family-focused programs offered at the College.

You can make a lasting impact on the lives of families in a wide variety of highly rewarding fields, including: Human Service Worker, Education Assistant, Health Care Assistant, or Early Childhood Education.

Families can be those we are born into, or those we choose. They can be big or they can be small. They can be traditional, or unconventional, and can be near or far. No matter who you consider your family to be, send them a little extra love today.

Stay safe.
