English Language Program
Are you new to Canada and interested in improving your English language skills? Being able to communicate in English can greatly improve your ability to find employment, interact with English-speaking friends and neighbours, and can help you to prepare for further education.
Why Consider the English Language Program?
We welcome students age 17 and older (mature students are welcome) from all over the world to our English Language Program where you work on improving your:

No study permit is required if you are attending for 6-months or less. Flexible start dates are available if you are joining in the first half of a semester and only enrolling short-term. You must attend a minimum of six weeks.

Certificate:
- Students who complete both ELP 70 and ELP 75 with a minimum grade of B will receive an English Language Certificate.
ELP Bridging Courses:
- ELP 98 is an intensive college preparation bridge course. Students in ELP 98 can take other academic courses at the same time. Students who arrive at the College of the Rockies with an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with a band of 5.5 in Reading and Writing must take ELP 98.
- ELP 95 is a companion co-requisite course to ELP 98 for students who successfully complete ELP 70 and 75 (or who place into ELP 98/95 through the Test of English Language Proficiency in-house placement test).
Note:
If you wish to use ELP 98 as a prerequisite for more advanced English courses, you must achieve the following in ELP 98:
- For COMC 100: minimum grade of 75%
- For ENGL 100: minimum grade of 85%

ELP-40 – Pre-Intermediate Academic Reading/Writing/Grammar ─ ELP 40
In this course, students will develop strategies for the successful use of pre-intermediate English language skills within a Canadian academic setting. They will integrate reading, writing and analytical skills through the study of intercultural situations and daily life topics. Students will apply those skills to create factual writings, to analyze adapted English readings and to express themselves using pre-intermediate grammatical structures.

In this course, students will develop strategies for the successful use of pre-intermediate English language skills within a Canadian academic setting. They will study intercultural situations and themes through classroom activities that integrate listening, communication and analytical skills. Students will apply those skills to create small group discussions, to respond to simplistic English listenings and to express themselves verbally using pre-intermediate English grammatical structures.

ELP-95 – Interactive Communication for College Preparation
In this course, students will build upon their cultural backgrounds and experiences to develop strategies for success in Canadian academic settings. They will study intercultural situations and themes through classroom activities that integrate listening, speaking, problem solving, and communication skills. By developing intercultural awareness, students will be able to analyze new cultural contexts, share their reflections, and leverage their own backgrounds to provide thoughtful expression in their academic programs

- Prerequisites: A student must have completed ELP 70 and ELP 75 with a minimum of 75% in both courses (or equivalent); or have taken the Test of English Language Proficiency (TELP) resulting in an ELP 95 placement score. Corequisites: Students who have successfully taken ELP 70 and ELP 75 (or equivalent) must take ELP 98 with ELP 95 as co-requisites. Students who place into ELP 98 with the TELP must take ELP 98 and ELP 95 as co-requisites.

ELP-98 – Academic Skills for College Preparation
In this college preparation course, students will build upon their backgrounds and experiences to develop strategies for success in Canadian academic settings. They will integrate reading, writing and critical thinking skills through the study of intercultural situations and academic subjects. Students will be able to analyse academic materials within cultural contexts, apply their knowledge, and provide thoughtful written expression of their learning.
- Minimum Credits: 3
- Length: 135 hours
- Prerequisites: Completion of ELP 70 and ELP 75 with a minimum of 75% in both courses (or equivalent);or Test of English Language Proficiency (TELP)assessment. Corequisites: Students who have successfully taken ELP 70 and ELP 75 (or equivalent) must take ELP 95 with ELP 98 as co-requisites. Students who place into ELP 98 with the TELP placement test must take ELP 98 and ELP 95 as co-requisites. Progression to: COMC 100: A minimum grade of 75% in ELP 98, or a minimum grade of 75% in ELP 98 and ELP 95 when taken as co-requisites. ENGL 100: A minimum grade of 85% in ELP 98.

Admission Requirements
Placement Test:
Students whose first language is not English wishing to study at the College of the Rockies are required to take the Test of English Language Proficiency (TELP). The TELP is scheduled at three different times during the year: late August, early January and late April. The TELP takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete and measures competency in listening, grammar, reading, vocabulary, academic writing skills and speaking. Based on their score, students are placed into the level that best helps them to develop English language skills. Students with an IELTS score with two or more bands of 5.5 or less must take the TELP.
